The kitchen clock says it’s early, but the light through the window is already doing its late-summer thing โ long, low, golden. I’m sitting at the table with my notebook open, and the first of August has just arrived, which means fall is closer than I want to admit. I love autumn more than almost any season. But this morning, I’d rather have a peach in one hand and a cup of coffee in the other.
Every week I set aside time for the small curation: what’s working on my stove, what’s been sitting on my reading list, what’s good to keep close. This is that roundup โ no deep dives today, just honest notes from a slow day at home.

The recipes I’m making this week
Here’s what’s actually going into the oven and onto plates around here:
- Cheesy beef and bean burritos. Creamy refried beans layered with spicy ground beef, green chile, and plenty of cheese. These have been a hit with my household for years โ we still make them often when dinner needs to be big and easy.
- Brown sugar salmon in the air fryer. Seasoned, subtly sweet, done in minutes. Salmon is already the most forgiving fish I cook; the air fryer just takes it further with very little effort.
- Chicken broccoli pasta. Tender chicken and vibrant broccoli in a homemade cream sauce. It’s fast, the textures work beautifully together, and on my busiest weeknights this beats takeout every time.
- Jalapeno cream corn. Crunchy sweet corn in a rich, creamy cheese-and-jalapeno sauce โ a summer side that has quietly become a favorite over the past couple of summers. It makes me happy every single time I make it.
- Peach burrata salad. Sweet peaches, tart blackberries, fresh mint, basil, and parsley, tossed simply. Beyond easy to assemble, yet it delivers flavors that feel far bigger than the ingredient list.
- Mango corn salsa. Sweet, spicy, with a satisfying crunch of fresh corn and mild jalapeno heat. Like most homemade salsas, it’s good immediately โ but let it rest and the flavors meld and deepen. Even better after an hour on the counter.
- Oatmeal lace cookies. Thin, chewy, buttery, with crispy edges. Hold one up to the light and in places you can nearly see through it. There’s a special ingredient that makes them even more irresistible โ and once cooled, they’re not fragile at all.
- Lemon angel pie. Only a handful of eggs, cream, sugar, and a lemon. I’ve been making it for years; everyone I’ve shared it with has asked for the recipe, and without fail it becomes a favorite in their home too.

The golden hour
If you’re deciding what to cook after work this week: make the mango corn salsa on Wednesday. Give it two days to mellow, and by Friday it’s better than the day it came off the stove. That’s the whole trick โ start early, let it sit, taste it again.
What I’m craving
Banana bread french toast. Yes, really. Banana bread, sliced thick, dipped in eggs and fried till golden. It sounds like too much comfort food stacked on top of itself โ that’s exactly the point. It’s going into this month’s breakfast plans.
Small favorites worth keeping
Silk hair ties. I bought my first pair over five years ago, and I’ve worn them almost every day since โ in the daytime, always at night before bed. They never leave a crease in my hair and they don’t pull on it at all. Breakage is nearly gone now. Some small things just keep working.
What I’m reading
The Correspondent by Virginia Evans. So many people put this on my list, and it sat there for years โ in part because it’s written as an epistolary novel, entirely in letters, which is honestly my least favorite style to sit down with. I’m glad I finally started.
It turned out to be a captivating read. After a slow beginning I didn’t want to put it down and finished it in just a couple of days. You get drawn into Sybil’s life; there are random subplots everywhere, letters written to all sorts of people for all kinds of reasons, some of them tying back together and others left loose in a very real way. If you haven’t read it yet, put it on your list.
What I’m listening to
King of Hearts by Brandon Lake. “Hard Fought Hallelujah” remains my favorite song on the album, but “Spare Change” gets me every single time too. There’s so much excellent music out there right now โ no pressure to keep up with all of it.
A note from Luna
Not every week is a grand adventure. Most weeks are just a table that’s set, a pie in the oven, and the light coming through the window at exactly the right angle. I’m wishing you a beautiful week โ filled with little things that make you smile.
